He was the Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Booker Prize, born in Nagasaki Japan, Kazuo Ishiguro’s book ‘Klara and the Sun’ is one of the most creative books that has been written. The manner in which he thinks of this story baffled me. There is not even one doubt of his ability to create such a wonderful story about an Artificial Friend.
Although the friend is artificial, the story is about emotion and love, especially identifying the true concepts that surround love. Seeing what love is? This modern method of scrutinizing love is memorizing. His analytical demonstration is simply brilliant, transforming the mind of the reader to understand areas one would ignore in reality. The Sunday Times wrote “A masterpiece of great beauty, meticulous control and, as ever clear simple prose”
The book also draws our attention to the fact of human negligence and lack of emotional understanding of circumstances that we experience on a daily basis. Our family, friends and even people we associate distantly hold strong emotions which we are unable to comprehend. However, Klara as mentioned with “outstanding observational skills” brings these elements to the surface. Therefore, the book shifts one’s emotional dimensions to unseen parallels. Hence, Ishiguro elevates himself as a writer throughout this book.
The manner in which he details about the Sun and the Sun rays, the color and the shapes for example “The Sun’s evening rays had started to fade…. The Sun’s own light in the barn continued to reduce, this new light source had become harder to ignore…” , such detailing is seen throughout the entire text strengthening his story line and also showcasing his ability of being extremely skilled in observing the surrounding environment. What we take as granted as the sun rays or the sun light, he observes it to utmost detail. This also shows us an important aspect which is to be mindful of our environment, be mindful of our emotions and others.
Ishiguro’s ability if simplicity of language is a clear indication he does not have a facade to hide behind. He brings out the best in him in comparison to some of his other texts. Therefore, this is a must read for anyone and read it many times. A masterpiece of brilliance is all I could conclude with.
